Timeless Traditions Shape Modern Relationships
Family in Japan seems like every other family in the world, but Japan’s culture has influenced the most important relationship of the family, the husband and wife relationship. Japan has many old manners that are still functional today. You can ask how a hundred-year-old manners still work in today’s society. Some of their behavior and manners reshaped for today’s world, but some changed just a little bit which makes them still functional.

Shaping Home, Raising Future Generations, and Setting Examples
Why is this relationship the most important? Together, husband and wife create a home, in which environment they will raise their children, who are going to be the future of society. Also, the husband and wife are giving the example of the ideal husband-wife relationship to their children, and what kind of relationship they should achieve when they are older. This most important relationship is based on mutual respect, love, and companionship between the husband and the wife. In Japan, this relationship has been divided into roles for each participant.

Traditional Roles in Japanese Marriage: The Husband as Provider and the Wife as Financial Manager
The most common role for the husband is simply the provider of the family which means that the husband goes to work and brings money to the house. Seems like there is nothing special about this type of role, except for his full confidence and trust in his wife.
In Japan, many wives choose to stay at home and manage the household finances. The husband gives his entire salary to his wife, who then handles expenses, savings, and the husband’s pocket money. In Japan, wives give their husbands an allowance that they can spend as they wish. The specific amount of the allowance is determined through mutual discussion between the spouses, based on their needs for a given time period.m and their discussion of how much is needed for a specific time. The wife’s role is basically the accountant of the family. In most cases like this, husband does not have to buy any meals or snacks because his wife prepares lunch boxes in Japan called “bento”.

Balancing Tradition with Modern Adaptations
The roles can be different from couple to couple, but this is the most common way the relationship goes. Of course, as time and trends are changing and moving the world, the roles are changing a bit too but most of the couples that already have this kind of relationship are just changing it into the way that is comfortable for themselves. Nowadays, the roles can also switch to the wife being the provider and the husband taking care of the house, but this is not so widespread, as Japan still likes the old way.
